Terramycin for Dogs – Ophthalmic + Tetracycline

Terramycin (oxytetracycline) is a tetracycline antibiotic. Primary use in modern veterinary practice is the ophthalmic ointment for bacterial conjunctivitis.

Ophthalmic Ointment

Composition

• Oxytetracycline 3.5 mg/g
• Polymyxin B 10,000 units/g

Protocol

1. Clean eye area with saline
2. Apply pea-sized strip to lower conjunctival sac
3. Close eye briefly to distribute
4. 3-4 times daily
5. Duration 5-7 days
6. Recheck if not improving

• Bacterial conjunctivitis
• Bacterial blepharitis
• Mild corneal ulcer adjunct
• Post-surgical prophylaxis
• Distichiasis-related irritation

⚠ Oral Use Largely Replaced by Doxycycline

If oral indicated

• 10-20 mg/kg PO q8h
• Doxycycline PREFERRED:
• Better tissue penetration
• Less food chelation
• Twice-daily dosing
• Less GI upset
• Safer in CKD

• NEVER growing dogs under 6 months (permanent teeth/bone discoloration)
• NEVER pregnant/lactating
• AVOID calcium, iron, magnesium, aluminum (chelation)
• Empty stomach
• Photosensitivity

Ophthalmic Safety

• Very rare side effects
• No systemic absorption concerns
• Safe for puppies (ophthalmic)
• Mild eye irritation possible

When NOT Improving

Recheck for:

• Viral conjunctivitis
• KCS (dry eye)
• Corneal ulcer
• Foreign body
• Allergic conjunctivitis
• Culture if resistant

How do I use Terramycin ointment on my dog’s eye?

STEP-BY-STEP:

1. GENTLY CLEAN around eye with saline or warm water
2. Have helper hold dog calmly
3. Pull down lower eyelid to expose conjunctival sac
4. Apply PEA-SIZED STRIP of ointment in the pouch
5. Don’t touch tube tip to eye
6. Close eye briefly to distribute
7. Allow dog to blink naturally
8. Wipe excess
9. Wash hands

FREQUENCY: 3-4 TIMES DAILY for 5-7 days. RECHECK if not improving by day 3-5 – may need different antibiotic, culture, or alternative diagnosis. APPLY BEFORE meals if dog typically licks face. Tube cap on when not in use to prevent contamination. Excellent topical safety – no systemic absorption concerns

Can I use Terramycin ointment on a puppy?

YES – OPHTHALMIC ointment is SAFE for puppies. UNLIKE oral tetracyclines (which cause teeth + bone discoloration in growing dogs), topical ophthalmic use has NO systemic absorption concerns

PROTOCOL same as adults:

1. Pea-sized strip 3-4 times daily
2. 5-7 days
3. Veterinary exam confirms bacterial conjunctivitis
4. Rule out other causes (foreign body, scratching, infection)

NEONATAL puppies (under 4 weeks):

1. Be very gentle
2. Helper holds
3. Smaller amount
4. Watch for excessive licking
5. Mother dog may lick off – keep puppy briefly separated
6. Excellent safety profile

ALTERNATIVES if Terramycin not working:

1. TOBRAMYCIN ophthalmic – similar
2. GENTAMICIN ophthalmic – similar
3. BNP ointment (bacitracin + neomycin + polymyxin) – similar

Should I use Terramycin or doxycycline orally for my dog?

DOXYCYCLINE preferred in modern practice for ORAL tetracycline use

ADVANTAGES of doxycycline over oxytetracycline (Terramycin oral):

1. TWICE-DAILY vs Q8H dosing (better compliance)
2. BETTER tissue penetration
3. LESS chelation with food/calcium (can give with most foods)
4. LESS GI upset
5. BETTER for tick-borne diseases (Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Rocky Mountain spotted fever)
6. Safer in CKD (less renal excretion)
7. Better intracellular penetration

WHEN TERRAMYCIN OPHTHALMIC INDICATED:

1. Bacterial conjunctivitis – primary use
2. Topical only – excellent safety
3. No systemic absorption concerns

WHEN ORAL OXYTETRACYCLINE:

1. Cost considerations – generic available
