Frequently Asked Questions

How do I bathe my dog with chlorhexidine shampoo?

TECHNIQUE for efficacy:

  1. WET DOG THOROUGHLY with lukewarm water (5-10 minutes)
  2. Apply chlorhexidine shampoo (3-4% for active infection, 2% for milder)
  3. LATHER WELL covering all affected areas
  4. MASSAGE in for 1-2 minutes
  5. SET TIMER for 10 MINUTES
  6. Keep dog calm during contact time
  7. RINSE THOROUGHLY 5-10 minutes
  8. Towel dry. 10-MINUTE CONTACT TIME is CRITICAL – inadequate contact = poor efficacy

FREQUENCY:

  1. Active infection – every 3-7 days
  2. Maintenance – every 1-2 weeks
  3. Atopic support – weekly

AVOID: eyes (use saline if accidental contact), perforated eardrum, brain/spine. Sometimes combined with mousse or leave-on conditioner after rinse. Severe cases need SYSTEMIC antibiotics (cephalexin, Clavamox) in ADDITION to topical

What is chlorhexidine used for in dogs?

BROAD-SPECTRUM ANTISEPTIC for: 1) PYODERMA – superficial + deep bacterial skin infection; primary topical treatment; 2) MALASSEZIA DERMATITIS – yeast skin infection; effective antifungal; 3) MIXED BACTERIAL-YEAST infections (most common); 4) ATOPIC DERMATITIS MAINTENANCE – reduces flare frequency; weekly bathing protocol; 5) INTERDIGITAL CYSTS – between toes; bandage adjunct; 6) HOT SPOTS / acute moist dermatitis – antimicrobial + cleansing; 7) WOUND FLUSHING – diluted to 0.05% (1:40 dilution of 2% solution); 8) SURGICAL SITE PREP – skin antisepsis; 9) DENTAL/PERIODONTAL disease – oral gel 0.12%; 10) ATOPIC SUPPORT – shampoo therapy adjunct; 11) DEMODICOSIS adjunct (Bravecto + chlorhexidine); 12) SARCOPTIC MANGE adjunct. EFFECTIVE against Staph (including MRSA), Strep, gram-negative bacteria, Malassezia yeast. Available as shampoo (2-4%), wipes (2-4%), spray (2-4%), solution (2% – dilute for wounds), oral gel (0.12%).

Is chlorhexidine safe for my dog’s skin and eyes?

SKIN: SAFE for routine topical use at labeled concentrations. RARE allergic reactions (1-2% of dogs) – switch to alternative shampoo if redness/itching worsens. CAN dry skin with frequent use – use moisturizing conditioner. Generally well-tolerated

EYES: NOT SAFE – severely irritating. Avoid eye contact during bathing. If accidental contact: flush thoroughly with saline or water for 10-15 minutes; vet visit if persistent redness/pain. Use eye-safe alternatives (saline) for face/eye area

EARS: SAFE for outer ear if eardrum INTACT. OTOTOXIC if eardrum perforated – can cause permanent hearing loss/vestibular damage. Verify eardrum status with vet before using in ears. Use Epi-Otic or Douxo Micellar (gentler) for ear cleaning

MOUTH: 0.12% oral gel SAFE for dental use. Higher concentrations not for oral use

INGESTION (large amount): rare but possible GI upset; usually self-limiting. AVOID concentrated chlorhexidine on brain/spinal cord (surgical exposure) – severe nerve toxicity

ALTERNATIVES for sensitive dogs:

  1. Benzoyl peroxide shampoo
  2. Ethyl lactate shampoo
  3. Miconazole shampoo
  4. Selsun Blue (selenium sulfide) – mild Malassezia
  5. Vet-formulated hypoallergenic products. Most dogs do well with chlorhexidine long-term
