Not every popular dog is the right dog for you. This 10-question quiz takes about two minutes and is designed by mapping your activity level, home, family situation, and tolerance for shedding/barking/grooming to the most-likely-to-thrive-in-your-home breed. No emails, no signup.
PuppaDogs publishes evidence-based veterinary calculators reviewed against Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook, ACVIM consensus statements, AAHA guidelines, and the manufacturer label. Read our editorial policy and how we verify drug doses.
How this quiz works
We picked eight breeds that together cover the realistic spectrum of dog ownership: low-energy apartment companions, family dogs, working-line athletes, independent breeds, and easy-keeper seniors. Each of the ten questions adjusts a score for the breeds that genuinely fit that answer.
Because owner-fit is the strongest predictor of whether a dog ends up relinquished to a shelter (the ASPCA cites unmet exercise needs and behavior surprises as the top two reasons), getting this match right matters more than picking the “cutest” breed.
What this quiz won’t replace
A quiz can give you a starting shortlist, not a final answer. Before you adopt or buy:
- Meet at least three adult dogs of the breed in person (not just puppies).
- Spend a weekend dog-sitting one to feel the daily rhythm.
- Ask any reputable breeder for OFA / PennHIP / heart / eye certs on the parents.
- Use our life expectancy calculator and lifetime cost calculator to plan realistically.
What we left out (on purpose)
We deliberately excluded a few wildly popular breeds (Yorkie, Poodle mixes, Husky) to keep the quiz to a manageable 8 result paths. They’ll be in the v2 expansion. If your real-life favorite is missing, that doesn’t mean it’s wrong – this is a starter shortlist.
Adopt vs shop
Whichever breed the quiz points you to, please check breed-specific rescues first. Almost every breed in this quiz has a national rescue network, and the rescued adults often come pre-trained.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this quiz scientifically valid?
It’s a structured starter shortlist, not a diagnostic. The questions and weights are built from veterinary behavior literature (Duffy, Hsu, Bradshaw) plus AKC breed profiles and breeder/rescue screening questionnaires – but no two-minute quiz can replace actually meeting the breed and the individual dog.
Can I retake the quiz to see all the results?
Yes – click ‘Take it again’ on the result page, or change your answer using the Back button. Your answers aren’t saved or shared anywhere.
Where do the breed photos come from?
All images on PuppaDogs are either licensed from veterinary stock libraries or AI-generated brand graphics created by us. We don’t use random Instagram-pulled photos.
My result was a breed I’ve never owned – now what?
Spend a weekend with a friend’s adult dog of that breed, contact the breed-specific rescue near you, and read the linked PuppaDogs calculators for that breed’s typical health and lifestyle needs before committing.
