⚡ Quick answer: Tapeworm segments in dog poop look like small, flat, white-cream grains of rice or sesame seeds, usually 4-6 mm long. They may still be wriggling when fresh. They’re most often seen on the surface of the stool or stuck to fur around the anus.

Short answer: Tapeworm segments in dog poop look like small, flat, white-cream grains of rice or sesame seeds, usually 4-6 mm long. They may still be wriggling when fresh. They’re most often seen on the surface of the stool or stuck to fur around the anus.

What you should actually do

  • Dipylidium tapeworm is transmitted by fleas – the dog must have eaten an infected flea.
  • Praziquantel (Droncit) is a single oral dose that clears the infection.
  • Treating the tapeworm without controlling fleas guarantees reinfection.
  • Fecal tests can miss tapeworms – visible segments are more reliable.
  • Children can rarely catch Dipylidium too, so wash hands after handling stool.

The most common tapeworm in pet dogs is Dipylidium caninum, which is transmitted by fleas. The lifecycle requires a dog to ingest an infected flea while grooming – so the presence of tapeworm segments is also a strong hint that the dog has, or recently had, fleas. Other tapeworms (Taenia, Echinococcus) are picked up from eating wildlife or raw viscera and look similar in stool but are more of a concern in rural/hunting dogs.

Treatment is praziquantel as a single oral dose, available as Droncit, or as part of Drontal Plus or Interceptor Plus. Critically, you also need to fix the flea problem – one monthly product such as NexGard, Bravecto, Simparica, or Credelio, plus thorough cleaning of bedding. Without flea control, the dog will re-ingest infected fleas within days and the segments will be back.
