Short answer: For most dogs, every 4-6 weeks with a gentle dog shampoo. Allergic dogs may need medicated baths 1-2 times weekly. Working/outdoor dogs may need more frequent baths. Avoid daily bathing – it strips the natural skin barrier and makes skin issues worse.
What you should actually do
- Healthy dog with normal coat: every 4-6 weeks.
- Atopic/allergic dogs: medicated bath (chlorhexidine, miconazole-chlorhexidine combo) 1-2x weekly during flares.
- Use dog-specific pH-balanced shampoo – human shampoo (pH 5.5) is too acidic for dog skin (pH 7).
- Towel dry then air dry – blow dryers on hot setting can burn skin.
- Bathing too often: dry/flaky skin, dull coat, increased itching, secondary infections.
Dog skin barrier is thinner than human skin and more easily disrupted. Over-bathing strips sebum and predisposes to yeast and bacterial overgrowth – the opposite of the intended effect.
Allergic dogs are an exception – frequent medicated baths remove allergens from the coat and treat secondary skin infections. This isn’t the same as routine bathing and needs vet-prescribed shampoo.
