My Aussie just turned 1. He’s been an angel since 8 weeks. Last 6 weeks he’s started growling when I approach his food bowl while he’s eating, and yesterday he snapped (didn’t make contact) when I tried to take a sock away.
This came out of nowhere. He’s well-socialized, never had food taken away aggressively, gets handled all the time. Is this just adolescent dog stuff or is this the start of a bigger problem?
Resource guarding emerging at 9-15 months is genuinely common as dogs hit social maturity — not a sign you've “done something wrong” in their puppyhood. But it does need to be handled correctly because the wrong response can escalate it materially.
The single most important rule: don't punish the growl. The growl is a warning — punishing it teaches the dog to skip the warning next time and go straight to the bite. This is the #1 way mild guarding becomes a bite problem.
What to do instead:
- Stop the triggering interactions immediately. Don’t approach his bowl, don’t try to take items by force. Let him eat in peace. Let him have the sock (toss treats to trade for high-value items only).
- Counter-condition to your approach. When he's eating, walk past at distance (10ft+) and drop a higher-value treat (chicken, cheese) on the floor near — not in — his bowl, then walk away. Over weeks, this changes his association with your approach from “they take my stuff” to “they predict bonus food.” Gradually decrease distance.
- Teach a structured trade. “Drop it” cue paired with a higher-value reward, practiced with low-value items first, generalized to higher-value over months. Mike Shikashio’s framework (he’s the canonical reference for canine aggression and resource guarding) is the go-to.
- If the guarding involves intent to bite, or has bitten in the past: work with a credentialed behavior consultant in-person. CDBC, IAABC-Accredited Behavior Consultant, or DACVB. Not a general obedience trainer.
For your specific situation: the snap-no-contact is a meaningful warning. Resource guarding is one of the most modifiable behavior issues IF handled correctly from this point. Most dogs (Jacobs et al. 2018) show substantial improvement within 8-16 weeks of structured counter-conditioning. The earlier you start, the easier it stays.
Got a resource-guarding consult with a CDBC for my dog at 14mo. $220 for a 90-min session + email plan. Best money I spent that year. The trade protocol completely fixed it inside 4 months. Don’t hesitate on the professional help — this is one area where YouTube training is genuinely dangerous.
