Frequently Asked Questions

How much ponazuril for my puppy with coccidia?

DOSE: 30-50 mg/kg PO SINGLE DOSE. EXAMPLES: 1) 2 kg puppy = 60-100 mg; 2) 5 kg = 150-250 mg; 3) 10 kg = 300-500 mg; 4) 20 kg = 600-1000 mg. COMPOUNDED LIQUID typically 200 mg/mL (from Marquis paste): 1) 2 kg = 0.3-0.5 mL; 2) 5 kg = 0.75-1.25 mL; 3) 10 kg = 1.5-2.5 mL; 4) 20 kg = 3-5 mL. Give once – some protocols repeat at 7 days for heavy infections. With or without food. Compound through veterinary pharmacy (Marquis paste off-label). Confirm coccidia diagnosis with fecal exam first. SINGLE-DOSE advantage vs Albon 5-10 days. Treat all puppies in litter + decontaminate environment (steam, 10% ammonia; bleach NOT effective).

Ponazuril vs Albon (sulfadimethoxine) for coccidia?

BOTH effective. PONAZURIL ADVANTAGES: 1) SINGLE DOSE (vs Albon 5-10 days); 2) Better compliance; 3) Better efficacy in some studies; 4) NO sulfa allergic reactions; 5) NO KCS risk (sulfa can cause); 6) Faster oocyst clearance; 7) Safe young puppies. ALBON ADVANTAGES: 1) Cheaper; 2) LABELED for dogs (Albon FDA-approved); 3) Familiar protocol; 4) Pre-mixed suspension available; 5) Easy availability. CHOOSE PONAZURIL: 1) Single-dose preferred (better compliance); 2) Sulfa-sensitive dog; 3) KCS concern; 4) Severe/heavy infection; 5) Outbreak control (single-dose easier); 6) Cost not primary concern. CHOOSE ALBON: 1) Cost-sensitive; 2) Familiar protocol; 3) Ponazuril unavailable; 4) Standard treatment OK. DOSE Albon: 50 mg/kg PO Day 1, then 25 mg/kg PO Days 2-10 (or until 2 days after diarrhea resolves). DOSE Ponazuril: 30-50 mg/kg PO single dose. Both need: 1) Confirmed coccidia diagnosis; 2) Supportive care (hydration); 3) Environmental decontamination; 4) Treat all household pets; 5) Follow-up fecal exam 2-4 weeks later.

My puppy has coccidia – what else do I need to do besides medication?

COMPREHENSIVE management essential. MEDICATION: 1) Ponazuril single dose OR Albon 5-10 days; 2) Confirm diagnosis with fecal flotation. SUPPORTIVE CARE: 1) HYDRATION – free water access; pedialyte if dehydrated; SQ fluids at vet if moderate dehydration; 2) BLAND DIET – boiled chicken + white rice 1:2; small frequent meals; 3) PROBIOTICS – FortiFlora, Proviable; 4) ANTI-DIARRHEAL adjunct (Pro-Pectalin); 5) Pumpkin for fiber. ENVIRONMENTAL DECONTAMINATION critical (coccidia oocysts resistant): 1) STEAM CLEAN bedding, surfaces, kennels; 2) 10% AMMONIA solution effective; 3) BLEACH NOT EFFECTIVE for coccidia oocysts; 4) Sunlight + drying helps; 5) Discard heavily contaminated bedding/toys; 6) Clean food/water bowls daily; 7) Remove stool promptly. HOUSEHOLD pet management: 1) TREAT ALL puppies in litter; 2) Test/treat household cats (different Cystoisospora species but cross-treatment); 3) Monitor adult dogs; 4) Quarantine sick from healthy; 5) NEW puppies test before introducing. RECHECK FECAL EXAM 2-4 weeks post-treatment. RECURRENT cases: 1) Stress-related immune dysfunction; 2) Reinfection from contaminated environment; 3) Persistent shedding; 4) Treat again + reassess environment. PREVENTION: 1) Good hygiene; 2) Prompt stool removal; 3) Avoid overcrowding; 4) Stress reduction; 5) Clean food/water; 6) Annual fecal exams; 7) Monthly preventives generally don’t cover coccidia.
