Praziquantel kills current tapeworm but Dipylidium is flea-transmitted. Without flea control = reinfection certain.

STANDARD: 5 mg/kg PO single dose. ECHINOCOCCUS: 7.5 mg/kg. EXAMPLES: 1) 5 kg = 25 mg (about 3/4 of 34 mg tablet); 2) 10 kg = 50 mg (~1.5 tabs); 3) 15 kg = 75 mg (~2 tabs); 4) 20 kg = 100 mg (~3 tabs); 5) 30 kg = 150 mg (~4.5 tabs); 6) 40 kg = 200 mg (~6 tabs). FORMULATIONS: Droncit 23 + 34 mg, Bayer Tapeworm Tablets 34 mg, Droncit Injection 5.68 mg/mL. SINGLE DOSE typically curative. For DIPYLIDIUM (flea tapeworm) – PAIR WITH MONTHLY FLEA CONTROL or reinfection certain. Don’t crush (very bitter – hypersalivation). Hide in food. Safe pregnant/lactating per label. My dog has rice-grain tapeworm segments – what do I do?
DIPYLIDIUM CANINUM = flea tapeworm – most common in pet dogs. APPEARANCE: rice-grain segments (4-6 mm cream-colored) on stool surface, perianal fur, or bedding. TREATMENT: 1) PRAZIQUANTEL 5 mg/kg single dose (Droncit, Bayer Tapeworm Tablets, or part of Drontal Plus); 2) MONTHLY FLEA CONTROL essential – reinfection certain without (Bravecto, NexGard, Simparica, Credelio, Frontline, Seresto); 3) Treat ALL pets in household (cats included); 4) Clean bedding, vacuum carpets/upholstery; 5) Recheck 3-4 weeks; 6) Continue flea control long-term. WHY FLEA CONTROL CRITICAL: 1) Dipylidium life cycle requires fleas; 2) Dog ingests infected flea while grooming; 3) Tapeworm matures in dog’s intestine; 4) Without fleas = cycle broken; 5) Single-dose praziquantel kills current but new infection from new flea ingestion certain. SIGNS: 1) Visible rice-grain segments (most common); 2) Scooting (anal itch from segments); 3) Otherwise usually healthy; 4) Fecal exam may MISS tapeworms (eggs released within proglottids); 5) Owner observation primary diagnostic. PREVENTION: 1) Year-round monthly flea control; 2) Periodic deworming if at risk; 3) Multi-pet households all on flea control.
Is praziquantel safe for my dog?
YES – EXCELLENT safety profile. Wide therapeutic margin. SAFETY: 1) Used decades; 2) Very few side effects; 3) Safe pregnant/lactating per label; 4) Safe puppies from 4 weeks old (Droncit); 5) Safe long-term (when needed); 6) Compatible with most medications; 7) MDR1-safe; 8) No significant drug interactions; 9) Safe with vaccines; 10) Safe with heartworm preventives. SIDE EFFECTS – very rare + mild: 1) HYPERSALIVATION if tablet crushed/chewed (very bitter taste); avoid crushing; hide in food; 2) Mild GI upset (vomiting, anorexia) – uncommon; 3) Brief lethargy – rare; 4) Allergic reactions extremely rare; 5) Diarrhea uncommon. NO SERIOUS adverse effects in dogs at therapeutic doses. WHEN TO STOP/CAUTION: 1) Very rare allergic reaction; 2) Persistent vomiting; 3) Severe lethargy; 4) Generally continue if mild GI – improves quickly. SAFER than many medications – one of safest dewormers available. COMBINATION products containing praziquantel (Drontal Plus, Interceptor Plus, NexGard Spectra) also excellent safety.
